Meet Our Board Members: Hugh Daly

We are proud to continue our blog series introducing the dedicated members of Anam Cara’s Board. Today, we meet Hugh Daly, whose background in general practice, combined with both personal experience and deep compassion, brings a thoughtful and grounded perspective to the organisation.

We hope you enjoy learning more about Hugh and the role he plays as part of Anam Cara’s Board.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I trained in medicine and spent my career working as a GP, mainly in West Dublin. From early on, I always knew general practice was where I wanted to be.

I completed my postgraduate training in Edinburgh before returning to Ireland, and I spent many years building and growing a practice. Along the way, I developed a particular interest in both paediatrics and psychiatry.

How did you first get involved with Anam Cara?

My connection to Anam Cara is both personal and through relationships. My family has experienced bereavement, including the loss of my sister at a young age and, more recently, a young family member.

I was also aware of Anam Cara through Tony Mahon, who encouraged me to get involved.

What makes Anam Cara’s support unique?

The peer support model is particularly powerful. Parents supporting other parents provides a level of empathy that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.

What is your role on the Board?

This is my first experience of serving on a board, and I hope to bring value through my medical background and experience working with families.

Has anything stood out to you since joining the Board?

I’ve been struck by the openness and honesty of the people involved and the importance of the support provided.

How do you see Anam Cara evolving in the coming years?

There is an opportunity to expand reach and increase access to support groups, while ensuring sustainable growth.

What would you say to someone considering supporting Anam Cara?

Once people understand what Anam Cara does, it becomes very easy to support. Every contribution makes a meaningful impact.
